Richmond and Lula Howell

Lula Howell was the daughter of, Fannie Howell, a former slave that was believed to be 115 years old!

Richmond was a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ and established the foundation for our family. He served as a deacon at Brown Creek Baptist Church. Richmond was a leader and believer of generational wealth and gave land to establish the Sturdivant Family Cemetery.

Richmond and Lula were married and made their home in Polkton, North Carolina. They had 13 children (listed below). They owned a large home with a wraparound porch, parlor, a pond for fishing and maintained many livestock and a farm. Lula prepared delicious meals from their farm and the pond on their land provided many hours of fishing and entertainment.

The grandchildren spent many hours at the house helping to shell peas and beans. The home had a root cellar with natural refrigeration to store fruits and vegetables.

Richmond was an avid hunter and Lula was a homemaker who welcomed many guests in her home to enjoy her delicious home cooked meals. (check out the Sturdivant cookbook in the Reunion section).

The Sturdivant legacy was born and continues on today through the roots planted by Richmond and Lula. Because of them we all are connected and carry the torch of the Sturdivant family.
